NRCAL
Community Literacy Project and Virtual Vietnamese Language Program

National Resource Center for Asian Languages (NRCAL) was established in 2014 to improve the nation’s capacity for the teaching and learning of Asian languages including Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Khmer. NRCAL is 1 of 16 language resource centers funded by the U.S. Department of Education. NRCAL draws on the expertise of language scholars, educators, and community stakeholders to develop learning and teaching resources, assessment tools, and professional development opportunities for teachers, students, and faculty. Through collaboration with PreK-12 school districts, institutes of higher education, and community-based organizations, we are able to provide resources for classrooms, families, and local communities.

The NRCAL was designed to improve the nation’s capacity for the teaching and learning of Asian languages including Vietnamese, Korean, Chinese, Japanese, and Khmer. CSUF has made a strong commitment to supporting less commonly taught languages, serving diverse student populations, expanding research on second language acquisition, and enhancing early childhood literacy.

Since 2017, the Vietnamese Children Book Writing Contests brought community partners together to support children’s literacy. Partners included judges from various media companies, small local businesses, public and community language schools teachers. Over 20 children's books have been published. Since 2021, over 1,000 students from all over the United States and around the world have enrolled in the free Vietnamese Virtual Language Program.

By donating to NRCAL’s community literacy project, you will directly contribute to resources for teachers and students of less commonly taught languages.

Help sustain our Community Literacy projects. Your support allows us to provide:

  • Free writing contests for children
  • Free Vietnamese Virtual Language Program for children and adults
  • Free language lesson plans for grade K-6
  • The illustration and publishing of books written by children for children
